Thorvald Jorgensen was born the 6th of March 1887 at Brigham City, Utah. He was the fifth son of Adolph Thomas and Emma Charlotta Nordstrom Jorgensen./ After having 5 sons, 3 daughters blessed their family. His early boyhood was spent in Brigham City where his parents were sent by the church when they emigrated to Utah from Copenhagen, Denmark. His father was Branch President in Copenhagen and also organized a fine choir that sang on the ship coming to America. Thorvald started school in the old vestry church. Teachers were Lydia Walker, also Maude Walker and others. Later he attended school in the 1st Ward. The teacher remembered was Lottie Jensen. It was a long walk especially in winter and always a cold canyon wind came down Box Elder Canyon. About this time his father was teaching his sons to play musical instruments and arranged music for them. It was a string orchestra at first (violin, viola, cello, and string bass). Grandpa taught all the instruments. They all got along very well and were soon playing for entertainments and dances in Brigham City and towns throughout the county. Thorvald liked the violin and studied with Professor Chris Christensen and played with the Christensen orchestra in the new Academy of Music and Dancing. It was here he met Pauline Woodyatt who later became his wife. The boys were offered a very good job from the Brigham Opera House Co., so they organized an 8-piece orchestra. They furnished music for dancing and the traveling shows that came to play in Brigham City (dramatic and vaudeville and musical shows). Prof. Christensen had a brass band and the boys all played in the band. Thorvald played trombone and baritone. About August 1906 Pauline replaced Estelle Jensen as pianist with the orchestra and the following June 6, 1907, Thorvald and Pauline were married in the Salt Lake Temple.
They lived in Brigham a year and then moved to Salt Lake where there was a greater opportunity in music. Their first home was 764 Third Ave. He continued his study of the violin with George Skelton, Willard Welke and Arthur Freber. The first steady work was with Robert Sweeten's Orchestra in winter and at the resorts, Saltair and Lagoon and the beautiful Salt Palace in summer. He played baritone with Helds Band many years--as well as Montgomerys band, Owen Sweeten and Strong bands. About 1912 he moved the family to Elizabeth Place (4th South between 3rd and 4th East). He was working with Willard Weike at the Wilks Theatre. It was a Stock Company with matinee and evening shows. Being close to his work made it much easier. In July 1914 he bought his first auto--a new 1914 Ford. He was very fond of the canyons and spent his spare time in them fishing, cooking on a bonfire, hiking, etc. He liked to travel and he made many trips from California to Boston without accident. He played violin many years in the Salt Lake Theatre and felt pretty disgusted when it was torn down and replaced by the Telephone Co. Building. He bought a home in 1914 at 668 Wilson Ave. where he lived all the rest of his life. Wilson Ave. was part of the Woodruff farm. Thorvald was a member of the first Utah Symphony Orchestra conducted by Anton Peterson and played with Symphony until 1951 under different leadership. He taught many students. He was kind and patient with them all. He taught music several years at the Utah State prison.
He was the father of three children--Thorvald Woodyatt Jorgensen born 22 Nov 1911 at 764 Third Avenue, Kathryn Mary Jorgensen born 8 January 1915 at 668 Wilson Avenue, and Harvey Jorgensen born 14 August 1922 at 668 Wilson Avenue. He was a High Priest in Belvedere Ward. He had a bad automobile accident the 14th of May 1949 near Willard, Utah, and was never well after. He suffered from shock and broken ribs. He had heart trouble and in 1951 fell and broke his hip. Then after many complications and several severe heart attaches he passed away the 3rd of July 1952 in the L.D.S. Hospital. He lies buried in Wasatch Lawn Cemetery in Salt Lake City. He had many hobbies--photography, fishing, and made our first radio.
